Riding bikes is a good way to pass a Saturday afternoon in the park or along trails in your neighborhood. It is fun for the entire family. Keep your children protected while they ride their bikes with you or with their friends.

Wear safety gear. Fatal injuries sustained in bicycle accidents are due to the rider not wearing a helmet for protection. Helmets come in all sizes and colors so they can be stylish for the discerning young rider. Helmets should fit the child without being too snug. A loose fitting helmet could turn during wear and block the child?s vision leading to an accident. Children should wear elbow and knee pads as well. This is especially important for a new rider who is not completely comfortable with their balance on a bike. Sandals and other open toed shoes should not be worn during bike rides. Any shoe that has a slippery sole that cannot grip the pedal should be avoided. For children?s bikes, the brakes are controlled by pushing the pedals backwards. Improper shoes may prohibit braking which creates a dangerous situation for your child. Safety gear should be worn each time the child rides their bike.

Make sure that the bicycle is adjusted well for the child. The child should be able to reach the handlebars without leaning forward. Leaning forward puts undue strain on the lower back. The bicycle seat should be tightened to where it doesn?t swivel and should be at a height where the child can place their feet flat on the ground when they are sitting still. The chain should be secured and not in danger of coming loose and falling off. Bicycle tires should be inflated to the proper pressure for safe riding on all terrain.

Your child should wear white or a light color if they will be out late riding their bike. Bicycle riders are knocked off of their bikes by motorists when the motorist can?t see them in the dim light of the evening. To increase their visibility, wearing light colored clothing is recommended. Bikes should be outfitted with reflectors on the front and the back. Safety vests with reflective strips can be purchased for wear during the evening.

When bike riding with traffic or in a neighborhood, it is important to know the rules concerning how one should ride. Never cross an intersection or busy street without looking both ways. A car that comes suddenly around a corner may not see your child?s bike in the road until it is too late. If your road has a designated bicycle lane, use it. It is there to keep you out of harm?s way from the passing cars. Bicycle riders should stay in a single file line when riding on the side of the street. Make sure that your child does not ride too close to parked cars. A motorist may open a door suddenly or back up and knock your child off of their bike.

Do not ride against the flow of traffic. Know proper hand signals. Where there are no traffic lights, your hand signals will let motorists know that you are about to make a turn. The signal for a left turn is to extend the left arm straight out to the side with the palm facing forward. A right turn signal uses the left arm again only it is bent upwards at the elbow with the palm facing forward. A right turn can be signaled with the right hand extended and the palm down. The sign for stop is made with the left arm bent at the elbow in a downward position with the palm facing the rear.

Bike riding provides family time as well as exercise for your child. To keep the fun going, make sure that they take all safety precautions when riding. Teach them to ride with others in mind.

At this article you will read what mountain biking is as well as how to get the information on various kinds of mountain bikes.

The most commonly used Mountain Bikes are:

Downhill Bikes:Most prominently used for competition in which one goes down the hill. So with that speed, bikes need to be with tough frames and with heavy-duty brakes such as disc or hydraulic brakes.

XC Bikes: This is another kind of bike which is highly used for competition in which one can go both down and climb hills. So its frame should be light but reasonably tough. Brakes used in this particular bike are v-brakes and light disc brakes.

Hybrid Bikes: This category of bikes is a good option for those who want to ride on both mountains and road.

These bikes either run on front suspension or on full suspension (which is a combination of both front and back suspensions). Various kinds of brakes employed in these bikes are:-

Rim Brakes: They are both light and powerful but their power decreases in muddy terrain where they become slippery.

Disc Brakes: They are light and powerful and are not affected by weather.

Hydraulic Brakes: They are very powerful and don’t need much maintenance, but are expensive than other brakes.

Frame Materials: The bikes can be made of aluminum, steel or titanium. These are very important elements of the bike as their composition determines the weight, strength, responsiveness and life of the bike.

Size: Like conventional bikes, mountain bikes come in small, medium and large sizes. But different manufactures use different reference point of measurement therefore sizing is not always consistent.

Latest Trends:

All Mountain Bikes: The “All Mountain Bikes” are characterized by 5-6 inch (125-150 mm) rims to take on very rough conditions.

29er Bike: This uses 700cc-sized rims and is suited for tires of 2 inches (50mm) width or more, so that it is able to roll over the obstacles.

Singlespeed: This is a blend of simplicity with innovation in suspension design.

Some of the other trends includeStable Platform Value Suspension Technology. Here the compressor shim stack has been replaced with a pair of overlapping cups. It also employs VPP suspension designs to balance different forces thereby eliminating unwanted compression without limiting bump absorption.

The concept of pocket bikes also known as mini bikes, mini motos, or mini motorcycles) began years ago in Japan, a country known for miniaturizing full-scale products. Some of today’s top motorcycle racers got their start in the sport of pocket bike racing. Champion riders started in this smaller scale sport and eventually dominated all pocket bike racing events throughout the world..
Until recently, quality pocket bikes were largely out of reach and unavailable to the casual rider. Prices of pocket bikes reached upwards of $4000. These astronomical costs were mainly due to research and development costs to provide optimum frame geometry, motor configurations and dimensions. Today’s manufacturers are able to use the information pioneered by these Italian and Japanese companies and develop pocket bikes that are essentially configured the same way including motor setup, frame geometry, braking systems, etc. Because these upfront costs were avoided, prices of these high quality pocket bikes are much less expensive today.

Beach cruiser lowriders are quickly become one of the most popular new bicycle styles available. In many urban areas, clubs are being formed to link together people who ride, design, and customize these popular bikes. These bikes are an offshoot of the traditional bicycle that was known as a beach cruiser. The first beach cruiser bikes were made in the 1950?s and were created to look like rocket ships or even motorcycles. The newer beach cruiser bikes are made to be lower to the ground and are slightly elongated, which is what they are called beach cruiser lowriders.

The first lowrider was said to have been rode during the 1960?s television show, ?The Munsters.? Eddie Munster rode a Schwinn Stingray that instantly drew people?s attention and caused them to want one of their very own. This caused a lowrider phenomenon across the country and this first bike was copied many times over. Beach cruiser lowriders are very enjoyable to ride because they are made for relaxing and enjoying the ride along the each or around your town in style and comfort.

Many people love the beach cruiser lowriders because they are very comfortable. This is due to the fact that riders ride sitting up, because of the handlebar height. This is easier on the back. These lowrider bikes also feature a wider, more cushioned seat, a seat shock absorber, and wider tires than normal, which all come together to make the rider smoother and more comfortable. These bikes usually one have one speed, too, which makes them simple to ride and control. If you ride on more varied terrain, then you may want to choose a multi-speed lowrider bike for your riding.

Beach cruiser lowrider bikes are not only comfortable, but they can also express your personality and individuality. They can be customized with almost any touch that you can imagine from gold components to intricate handpaintings. It is a great way to allow your imagination to take over your detailing so that you create a bike that you are not only proud of, but that is also a piece of art. Customizing only increases the popularity of these bikes. You will easily be able to find a company that will offer you everything that you need to customize your lowrider bike yourself, or you can choose to have it customized for you. In no time, you will be well on your way to having the bike of your dreams that is fun to ride and look at.

Pocket bikes can be used for both recreation and competition. While it was the Japanese that invented the pocket bike form, they did not become serious racing machines until the arrival of the first Italian models from Polini. Depending on the model and HP, performance varies. The smaller industrial-motored models used by Junior class racers are capable of speeds of over 35 mph, the average 4.2 hp and 6.2 hp racing models achieve about 40-45 mph, and open class machines reach speeds over 50 mph. These speeds become even more impressive when you consider the size of pocket bikes. The average length of a pocket bike measures approximately 47 inches, and the average height is 18 inches. Indeed, these small machines are capable of great speeds and impressive racing performances.

Pocket bikes, depending on the make, are suitable for adults and for children over the age of 12. Children, though, should always be under adult supervision when riding their pocket bikes. This is not to say that children cannot ride pocket bikes. In fact, there are a growing number of racetracks and go-kart tracks that host pocket bike races for racers of various ages and skill levels.

If you are new to pocket bike riding, it is best to start small. There is a great selection of two-stroke pocket bikes that are meant for the beginner rider. Whether the bike is to be ridden by a child or by an adult, these bikes are less intense and will teach you how to ride a pocket bike without the intimidation that the larger vehicles tend to bring.

A great two-stroke pocket bike for beginner riders is the 49cc Lightening Chopper. This miniature motorcycle has a cool, sleek design that will be attractive to both children and adults. Whether you have been riding for 10 minutes or 10 years, you will look hot on this two-stroke pocket bike.

There are hundreds of online stores that offer a great variety of pocket bikes-miniature versions of actual, full-size motorcycles-that offer fun and thrills to both the young racer and the experienced professional.

There are many makes and models of mountain bikes on the market today. In fact, you can usually find exactly what you want – right off the showroom floor – without ordering specialized mountain bikes. However, sometimes specialized mountain bikes can offer more of what you want in a ride!

Bikes can be specialized in a variety of ways – depending on what type of performance you want from the bike. Some bikes are even specialized simply to look a certain way, and the specialization has little or nothing to do with performance. Again, it all just depends on what you want and what you need – and how much you are willing to pay for it.

Many people request or make very small changes to the bike – but certain changes turn an ordinary mountain bike into a specialized mountain bike – no doubt about it! For instance, many people want specialized frames, but everything else about the bike is factory standard. A large majority of people want specialized ultra-smooth suspension seat posts or fully adjustable handlebars made of alloy.

Specialized suspensions are common requests and modifications that a large number of mountain bikers make. Specialized tires, which are suited to specific types of terrain, are popular as well. Of course, specialized paint jobs or designs are the top requests and modifications made by those who place a great deal of importance on the look of the bike as well.

Specialized parts and components cost a lot of money in most cases, but some specialization and customization can be done affordably, if you are willing to do the work yourself and only pay for the needed parts. Having to pay a shop to do the work starts driving the costs up quickly! So, if you want to customize your bike in anyway, try to learn what you need to know to do the work yourself to keep costs down.

Some people have major specialization work done, and by the time the work is complete – the bike rides and looks like a totally different bike! Of course this type of specialization should be reserved for expert riders who know exactly what they want, and how those customizations will affect their ride or their techniques. This type of specialization runs into the thousands of dollars – over the cost of the bike without the specialization!

Beware of the word specialized! It doesn’t always mean what you think it means. For instance, many bike shops use the word ‘specialized’ in their business name – this doesn’t necessarily mean that they sell specialized bikes. It is also important to note that a specialized bike, in most cases, does not mean that you are the only person in the world with that type of bike – unless you’ve ordered a specialized bike that is guaranteed to be one-a-kind (most bike shops will not make this guarantee, but you could get such a guarantee from a major manufacturer).

Beginners do not need specialized bikes. Again, the average rider can find exactly what they want and need in a bike shop, or at an Internet bike store. Some bikes arrive at the store for resale already specialized – in almost every case you have the option of getting a bike that you see in a store customized to suite your needs, but it usually costs quite a bit, and you have to wait for the parts to come in and the work to be done before you can take the bike out of the store and onto the trails.

The best way to get a specialized mountain bike is to order one at an online bike store, or directly through the manufacturer. This is the best way to ensure that you are getting the right specialization to suit your needs and desires. Just make sure that you have enough experience with mountain bikes to know what kind of specialization you want before you just start adding or changing components without fully planning or thinking things through – sometimes specialization can ruin your ride, as opposed to improving it – which is what specialized mountain bikes are supposed to be all about!

How to choose a mountain bike depends on what you are going to do with it, if all you want your new mountain bike for is going for a nice leisurely ride on the canal path or a ride in the woods with the dog, well you wont need a full suspension downhill machine with 4 inch travel on the forks and a fully articulated rear end with damping and rebound control.

+ Where to Start From.

If you do want to go for an easy ride in the park you don?t need to spend too much, if you think you will do any off-road riding then big tread tires maybe all you need, but if you think you might try some rough stuff then you will need suspension. Gears will probably be Shimano, brakes must be V-brakes, but could be made by a few different manufacturers, all the rest of the MTB components will depend on how much you can spend. If you go to your local bike shop or big sports store and see what they?ve got to offer, then buy it or have look on the Internet and maybe you?ll find the same thing at a better price.

+ The Next Step Up.

So maybe you want to be a bit more adventurous, more off-road, more forest tracks and dry boulder river beds, then you?ll need something a little lighter, with suspension forks. All this will cost you more money, but will be worth it for the extra enjoyment and adventure. With a better mountain bike it will have a sportier handling and because it is lighter, it will be easier to struggle up the hills before you come flying down the other side. The components will again be Shimano and the quality will depend on how much money you can spend. V-brakes and Rapid-fire gear shifters, along with Shimano chain set, bottom bracket and headset. Handle bars, stem and seat pin should be alloy and along with a comfortable saddle you?ll be set to take to the hills.

+ More Money, More Bike.

The next rung up on the mountain bike ladder would be good enough to race on. There are many to choose from, get on the net and surf the bike manufacturers sites and all the shop sites along with the magazines for juicy photos of the bikes. The top manufacturers in this price range, I would say are: – Trek, Giant, Specialized and Cannondale, these companies make the nicest frames with the best mountain bike parts available at the price, gears will be either Shimano or SRAM, brakes could be V-brakes or cable disc brakes, both are very good and light, most of the other MTB parts, of course will be Shimano and as usual get the best you can afford. There are many combinations of hubs and rims to make up your wheels; hubs from Shimano and rims form Mavic are the usual mix. Then you have to choose which suspension forks to put on you bike, you may not get a choice, depending on which bike you buy, the main ones are Suntour, Marzocchi, Manitou, Fox, RockShox and RST, buy any of these and you wont go far wrong.

+ Top Bikes?. Top Money.

If you want what the professionals ride you will have to pay a lot of money a professional MTB. As with road bike at the top of the range, you can specify what you want to build up your dream bike. Top bikes frames to spend your money on could be Klien, Scott, Rocky Mountain, Gary Fisher, Santa Cruz and K2; these are some of the most sought after bike frames in the world and would be the envy of your friends. Probably the best forks to put on your frame would be RockShox SID?s these are light and do all the things you need with control of all functions, there are many other to also to consider, look at how much travel they have and the rebound and damping systems. Gears again will be either SRAM or Shimano Rapid fire, XT or XTR, more money could be spent on carbon or very light alloy cranks, the brakes should be hydraulic discs from Hayes, Pace or Magura or stick to the trusted V-bakes. Wheels from Shimano or Mavic or some fancy carbon wheels, but remember they will have to take a lot of punishment, so maybe better to go for reliability over light weight expense. Carbon handle bars, stem and seat pin and a light weight race saddle and Time or Shimano SPD clipless pedals, then your choice of tires will depend on what terrain and ground conditions you are going to ride on.

+ And Downhilling?

Downhill bikes are very different, more like a cross country motor bike, but without the engine, low center of gravity and a lot of travel on the suspension on the forks and the rear end, disc brakes, wide rims and fat tires, gears are only at the back as usually a single chain set is used. Unless your going to do a lot of downhill racing then there isn?t much point in buying one as you have to get up the hill first before you can come down and as light weight is not an issue with downhill bikes, they are very heavy to get up hill with out the use of a tow rope or a ski lift.
